I feel standards of physical fitness and wellness should be publicized for school districts. Identifying some goals for flexibility, endurance, cardiovascular capacity and strength would give districts real targets for children at various stages and ages.
Too often the emphasis is on sports, but a focus on wellness and fitness would benefit a broader group as well as be cheaper overall. Basic calisthenics, bodyweight exercise, walking and running don't require a lot of equipment only basic items like shoes gym clothes and a strong consistent motivation.
Money grants and rewards could be given to districts that achieve high levels of fitness and wellness overall.
The epidemic of childhood obesity has accelerated and needs to be addressed in a real way with concrete steps. The benefits in prevention of disease like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and coronary artery disease are the most obvious. There are also indications in studies this would improve academic performance as well.
