Reverse college lending deregulation

The deregulation bonanza of the last two presidential administrations has created an educational cost structure in which tuition has doubled in the last ten years and resulting in increases at almost twice the rate of inflation. Students today can easily pay 30-50% of their income servicing their educational debt. Educational debt has become almost impossible to absolve through bankruptcy compared to home ownership and ...more »

Develop ED "Learning Community" for kids

One idea that has come to mind is the development of an ED website that kids could use as a place for fun, competitive learning. Kids would register with the site and be able to participate in various learning games against children from all across the country. Games could include game-show style quizzes, logic puzzles, historical scavenger hunts, etc. Children would be rewarded with online awards that they could display ...more »

Informed citizen participation

Something that has been missing for decades in our school systems would be the study of both ethics and logic. Ethics at a young age would help foster moral practices in government and business. Logic would help people realize when falacious arguments are being forced upon them in the media, courtrooms, and government broadcasts. As I learned in obtaining my degree, logic teaches you how to think for yourself. What a ...more »

Public Schools Endowment

Set up an Endowment or Annuity for public schools, so that education is not tied to the economy. How can we provide a FREE and APPROPRIATE education for all our students when we have to lay-off half the teachers to balance the budget because the economy has tanked. In order for education to truly be free and appropriate it has to not be tied so closely to the economy. Schools should run the same during a boom or a ...more »

Digital Learning Objects

More and more coures/degrees are being offered online. However, most course content remains a mixture of text and hyperlinks. Funds are needed for colleges to develop high quality digital, interactive content. Software programs that allow instructors to create digital content is often too expensive for colleges to purchase. Also, instructors do not have the skill sets required to develop content using these programs. ...more »

Electronic Training Modules

In response to Adam M. Smith's suggestion for "chunks" of instruction materials instead of entire on-line books, there is already something like this available, called Advanced Distributed Learning, which is run by ADL CoLabs, in the federal government: http://www.adlnet.gov

Replace year-long grades (1st-12th) w/ more granular units

I've thought for many years that it's very odd how we make kids advance one year at a time in all subjects regardless of how they're doing on any individual one. And then, if worse comes to worse, we keep them back a whole grade, or move them forward even though they haven't mastered the material. In real life, we don't couple all kinds of tasks and rewards that aren't logically linked. The over-broad nature of year-long ...more »

Fitness standards

I feel standards of physical fitness and wellness should be publicized for school districts. Identifying some goals for flexibility, endurance, cardiovascular capacity and strength would give districts real targets for children at various stages and ages. Too often the emphasis is on sports, but a focus on wellness and fitness would benefit a broader group as well as be cheaper overall. Basic calisthenics, bodyweight ...more »

Thomas Jefferson Based Education

Thomas Jefferson was educated in the classical method. We need to bring that back today. Educate in the classics and incorporate the modern technology. This is not a new way of doing business nor is it a new tool, but it was set aside over 100 years ago and needs to be re-implemented.

Early College Initiatives

In 2004 FIPSE funded a program at North Central State College in Mansfield, Ohio to start high school students into an early college program in engineering technology. We have six years of experience in this program and good data gathered on our graduates. The FIPSE money was done in 2007 but we are self-sustaining through Ohio's student funding. Our students are graduating from college and high school in the same week. ...more »

Develop an open source, tablet PC for public school students.

The digital revolution has occurred and for our students to compete they have to have the best tools. The idea of having and open-source, free tablet PC for public school students would not only improve how children learn and interact but also save money. A smaller computer with wifi, an e-reader, and keyboard dock would cost around $120 per unit. At $200 a student, less than the cost of books for a high school student ...more »

Ban Teacher's Unions to Increase Accountability

"Teaching is a special profession where unionization is actually COUNTER productive." I'm sure the idea is making many readers fill with rage, however I'd hope these people will consider the facts before they jump to conclusions. 1. Teaching is one of the only professions where employee accountability is nearly impossible. There is virtually no way to chart a teacher's effectiveness, productivity, and motivation accurately. ...more »
