Early College Initiatives

In 2004 FIPSE funded a program at North Central State College in Mansfield, Ohio to start high school students into an early college program in engineering technology. We have six years of experience in this program and good data gathered on our graduates. The FIPSE money was done in 2007 but we are self-sustaining through Ohio's student funding. Our students are graduating from college and high school in the same week.... more »

Post Determinations for all LEAs on IDEA Implementation

Every state is required to make an annual determination regarding implemenation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for every local educational agency (LEA) within the state. Based on guidance from USED, states have not made these annual determinations available to the public.

USED should (1) instruct all states to post annual LEA determinations on their state dept. of education web sites - in an... more »

Develop an open source, tablet PC for public school students.

The digital revolution has occurred and for our students to compete they have to have the best tools. The idea of having and open-source, free tablet PC for public school students would not only improve how children learn and interact but also save money. A smaller computer with wifi, an e-reader, and keyboard dock would cost around $120 per unit. At $200 a student, less than the cost of books for a high school student... more »

Take the Politics Out of Education/Parent Accountability

1. Get rid of elected school boards. They make decisions based on politics NOT for the students.
2. Revisit welfare reform and include more ties to parent continuing education and student performance.
3. Offer incentives for administrators with core-subject backgrounds. There's something to be said about a leader who can do their teachers jobs in their absence.
4. Follow up on districts that received funds from the... more »

ability to fix mistaken vote

This style of site is a good one, but you might take a few pointers from some other, similar sites. For example: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/ . They have three different options to vote: Disagree, Agree, and Abstain.

Beyond that, a mistaken mis-click is easily remedied, by clicking on another option. Sadly, I've already mis-clicked a couple ideas in this forum, so it would be handy to have.

State University oversight

I Would suggest that a phased in program of limiting federal money for states that decline to put the supervision of their university system in the hands of professional educators or, at the very least elected officials.
Currently, many states have a board of Regents composed of retired business people who Are there as a reward for political support and who serve long enough to collect a pension without making any obvious... more »

Ban Teacher's Unions to Increase Accountability

"Teaching is a special profession where unionization is actually COUNTER productive."

I'm sure the idea is making many readers fill with rage, however I'd hope these people will consider the facts before they jump to conclusions.

1. Teaching is one of the only professions where employee accountability is nearly impossible. There is virtually no way to chart a teacher's effectiveness, productivity, and motivation accurately.... more »

How to Improve Our Schools

In order for us to become a more perfect union I think that the following should take place to improve out eduction system:
1. Let the teachers take control in their classrooms and stop overtesting.
2. Understand that not all children have the ability to achieve at the same rate of speed.
3. Special needs students should not always be placed in the regular classroom because it interferes with the education of the students... more »

Research skills based curriculum

Problem:The education system of the USA does little to prepare students for problems and subjects that they have not yet been exposed to through the public school system.

The fast paced nature of the modern economy involves rapidly changing skill sets, as employees change employers relatively frequently.

Solution: Every semester, students will use independent research utilizing any and all available resources to teach... more »

Differing Diploma Standards

I feel that students should be able to choose a path of education that is best suited for their skills as well as their personal feelings. The more we try to force students into a box the more they will resist. Just as in the Universal Design for Learning you need to provide multiple means of expression and engagement. In this respect I feel that students should be able to have multiple options towards their own individual... more »

Business skills based curriculum

The problem:
Modern American's as a whole are too dependent on their employer's for income. Few know what is involved in starting and running a business.

Solution:
A Business 101 class should be required of all high school students their freshmen year. Part of this class would involve every student forming their own sole proprietorship, partnership, limited partnership, trust, corporation, and LLC. The class should form... more »

Financing Public Education

A liaison should be created between students of public education and the offices of Federal and State Departments such as NASA, CIA, FBI, BLM, etc.

The job of this liaison would be to take long standing problems of efficiency and productivity:
-prepare a presentation of the problem,
-prepare a grant proposal
-Finally: to disseminate this presentation to the schools to be evaluated by the students.

Academic Scholarships... more »

Objective based education

The supposed goal of our public education system seems to be socialization as much as it is education, however it fails horribly at developing the ability to work effectively as a team.

FIRST Robotics goes a long way towards accomplishing this, however it's an underfunded extra-curricular which is perceived by many as "nerdy".

My specific recommendations are as follows:
Current "group projects" resemble unions in the... more »

Technology and Education

Mandate all teachers film their lecture's and distribute them in DVD, and .mpeg format.

Individual video lecture's enable the teacher to focus their time on 1 on 1 teaching instead of practicing their Greek theater.

This allows students to move at a more individualized pace, with the intelligent students graduating high school in a single year.

This requires that school's receive funding not based on attendance, but... more »

Technology and Education

Department of education should have an equivalent of "Bell labs" developing open source educational tools. The private market may be more efficient, however that includes the science of marking up prices which is a frivolous expense to tax payers and invites corruption of the acquisition process.

An example would be mass produced replacement/retrofit "desk" tops with an LCD screen built in to it under a glass plate.... more »
